Lola Levine is NOT Mean! Chapters 1-7:
One District, One Book
Posted by NASD on 5/31/2022
We are excited to announce that all of our elementary students and families will participate in the Norristown Area School District’s One District, One Book initiative. This summer, we invite families to read Lola Levine is Not Mean! by Monica Brown. Every child in Grades K-4 will be receiving a copy of the book. The first of a chapter series, this story is about a young girl named Lola who is both Peruvian and Jewish. We will read about her attempts to fit in with her peers at school and on the soccer field. Throughout the book we will explore the themes of friendship, family heritage, and soccer, with humor sprinkled throughout the story.
Our goals with the One District, One Book initiative are two-fold. First, we would like to create a shared reading experience that brings together our community. Starting on June 13th, we will announce the “Chapter of the Week” on our One District, One Book website as well as on our social media outlets. We encourage you to read the chapter together as a family and will offer a video read-aloud of the chapter from an NASD staff member or student. At the end of each week, families may answer trivia questions about that week’s chapter that will be shared via a Google Form on NASD social media outlets. Each household will work together to submit one entry per week. Each household trivia entry with seven out of ten correct answers will be entered into raffle drawings that will take place this upcoming September, where students will have the chance to win prizes!
Our second goal with this initiative is for our elementary families to take the time to enjoy reading together this summer. Reading aloud to children has been shown to help improve student listening comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and develop a positive attitude towards reading. In addition to supporting our students in becoming stronger readers, we hope that reading together will be a happy bonding experience for your family.
