NASD HEALTH COUNCIL IS FORMEDThe Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 required each school district participating in the National School Lunch Program to implement a Local Wellness Policy by July 1, 2006. To accomplish this task, the Norristown Area School Health Council was formed during the 2005-06 school year. Members of this group include parents, students, community members, NASD staff, and a representative from the School Board. Staff members sitting on this council include individuals with diverse backgrounds; we are proud to have teachers, school nurses, a building principal, and food service personnel all working together on this topic. The Health Council worked diligently during the 2005-06 school year drafting a policy which promotes student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning experience. This policy was adopted by the School Board on May 22, 2006 and continues to be updated as we receive direction from the Federal and State Government. A copy of this policy can also be found on this link.
We continue to work diligently to development, review, update and implement our Local School Wellness Policy. Please join the Norristown Area School Health Council and help us to promote student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity so that our school community can continue on the path of health and wellness! You may contact the Food Service Director at 610-630-5023. We look forward to seeing you!
Review of the
Local School Wellness Policy occurs each spring. Each school in the District is sent a rubric
containing measurable goals and compliance with wellness policy criteria. Each of the sections of the Local School
Wellness Policy, which include Nutrition Education, Physical Activity, Physical
Education, Other School Based Activities, and Nutrition Guidelines, contain
criteria used in review and evaluation.
Principals and school staff are asked to complete the criteria,
reviewing their school using the dimensions of unsatisfactory, basic,
proficient, and distinguished. All
school results are compiled by the Director of Food Services and provided to
the Norristown Area School Health Council and the Board of Directors of the
Norristown Area School District at School Board meeting. We invite you to review the assessment of our Local Wellness Policy.
